Young visitors marvel at Georgia O'Keefe's expansive Sky above Clouds IV, the artist's stylized vision of the endless cloud formations seen from airplanes. O'Keefe painted the 8x24-foot canvas in 1965 at age 77. It became part of the permanent collection at the Art Institute of Chicago after the organizers of a 1970 retrospective of her work realized it was too large to fit through the doors of the San Francisco Museum of Art, the intended next stop on the tour.

Marc Chagall's America Windows celebrate the U.S. Bicentennial and merge imagery from history, the Chicago skyline, and the arts. The six panels, created with stained-glass maker Charles Marq, incorporate themes of music, literature, theater, dance, architecture and painting.

A 22-year-old Pablo Picasso painted The Old Guitarist in 1903-04 during his celebrated Blue Period. The monochromatic palette reveals themes of poverty and isolation, and the elongated, angular figure of the blind musician reflects the artist's interest in the style of 16th-century artist El Greco.

Greyed Rainbow reflects Jackson Pollock's signature style of abstract expressionism with the layered drips, splatters and sweeping arcs of paint often described as "action painting."

The Deering Family Galleries of Medieval and Renaissance Art, Arms, and Armor display nearly 700 objects from the museum’s rich collection of monumental altarpieces, exquisite jewelry, and arms and armor from the years 1200 to 1600.
Gift of Mrs. James Ward Thorne
The Thorne Rooms exhibit contains painstakingly constructed models on a scale of 1 inch to 1 foot (1:12) that provide intriguing, detailed views of European interiors from the 16th century to the 1930s, and American furnishings from the 17th century to 1940. The 68 miniature rooms were conceived by Chicago socialite Mrs. James Ward Thorne and constructed between 1934 and 1940 by a number of skilled craftsmen according to her exacting specifications.
